Keeping children safe
Accident / incident policy •The safety of your child is paramount and I will take every measure I can to protect your child – including helping your child to behave safely
•My premises have been checked by Ofsted and meet the national standards
•I regularly review and update my Risk Assessments for all aspects of my working environment and complete new ones as required
•I hold a valid paediatric First Aid Certificate as required by Ofsted
•I can administer First Aid and my First Aid box is clearly labelled and easily accessible, on top of the playroom cupboard with my Accident book and advice about illnesses (I have a second First Aid kit in the car that I use for outings). Any accident or incidents are recorded for parents to sign
•Parent emergency contact numbers can be accessed easily for use in an emergency
•I ask for parents’ written permission to access emergency treatment and to administer first aid (incl plasters) for their child if needed
Child protection /safeguarding children policy & physical contact info•I am committed to creating and maintaining the safest possible environment for babies, children and young people to be cared for and educated in – all children, regardless of age, gender, disability, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity have the right to equal protection from any type of harm or abuse and freedom from abuse
•Children will not be punished by any form of hitting, slapping, shaking, pushing or degrading treatment
•My first responsibility and priority is towards the children in my care
•I understand the issues involved in safeguarding children and take all reasonable steps to minimise risks
•I am aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse ( incl physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect) as stated in ‘What to do if you are worried’ leaflet (copy available on request)
•I offer activities designed to help children develop socially and emotionally and to extend their knowledge and understanding of the world around them
•My behaviour management policy clearly states that I do not use physical sanctions to manage a child’s behaviour and that restraint would only be used as a last resort, in order to prevent children from hurting either themselves or someone else. It will never be used as a punishment
•Whenever practical, I keep all children within my sight or hearing at all times. I have a set of policies for the over 8s, who may wish to walk home from school alone, or go on bike rides while in my care etc
Dropping off & collection / non collection / closure•I have settling in notes in my ‘Welcome pack’ and will discuss my procedure with you
•The drive leads straight onto a busy road and bus route and children will often run out of the door, in their excitement to see you and get into your car – please restrain them!
•I will only release your child to a named person or someone with a password from you
•I will not discuss sensitive issues with you at these times as small children have large ears
•I know that sometimes you will be unavoidably detained – please ring me!
•If you do not come to collect your child, I will follow my uncollected children procedure
•If I have to close, I will follow my closure policy
Emergency policy Incl fire safety plan •I keep my premises as safe as possible and carry out daily checks
•I involve children in regular fire practices and check my fire alarms regularly
•I aim to keep children within my sight or hearing at all times – except for over 8s who walk to school or back, with permission signed by their parents. I have wrist bands for all children which have my telephone number on the back and the children know why they are wearing them
•I help children to learn safety awareness through discussion and planned activities
•I keep a fully-charged mobile telephone on my person at all times when I am childminding
•I have a fire safety and evacuation guide to follow and fire exits are clearly marked on my Fire Escape Plan, which is on my parents’ notice board
Etc..... just short statements showing the main points of the policy - no flannel
