I am currently writing my Accident and Emergency policy and am a little confused...it doesn't take a lot!! I am using the NCMA form as a guide and it states that "If I have to accompany or take a child to hospital, I will either take the other children with me, or call my emergency back-up cover. This will be another registered childminder or known responsible adult." Who can the responsible adult be? For example can my partner, who I live with and who is being CRB checked be named here? Obviously having another registered childminder handy would always be preferable but as this may not always be possible who do you name as an alternative 'responsible adult'??

I've got my partner who is CRB'd and a neighbour who is known to the children etc I think you need to show you've thought it through and parents are secure in the knowledge their child will be with someone who knows them and who they feel safe with Have a think how you would handle transfer of sensitive information in times of emergency as well eg allergy stuff, parents phone numbers (and their emergency ones if parents aren't there) etc Sarahx

If you have your neighbour as an emergency back-up do they also have to be CRB checked?

I thought all adults looking after children in a childminding sense had to be CRB checked? I maybe wrong. Susan x

Ofsted told me that while it is good practice for all people looking after children to be CRB'd, this is obviously impractical in an emergency situation they would prefer it if we used other childminders but again this isn't always possible So long as parents are happy about your choice of emergency contact then they are ok because ultimately it's going to be an emergency situation and un-plannable as to who is in when you need them That was, however, before EYFS and I don't know what any new rules will say.... so might be worth checking!! Thanks for clarifying that Sarah - I thought the same as Wiggly until you explained.

i've got my husband and next door neighbour (also a registered childminder) as my emergency backup but at the end of the day in an emergency as long as you have parental permission a known adult to the children should be ok. Jane
