Hi Bella and welcome to the forum The stuff Angel has put in the B23 that Sarah has mentioned will be a great help to you. There is also a bit I put on the website about observations it might help: childmindinghelp.co.uk/observations.html

I agree with the above - angels ideas are a great starting point and will give you a basic format. You will probably think of other ideas from this. Have a look and give us a shout if you still have problems!

Set up an activity with sand tray, containers of different sizes, sticks and shells and a small jug of water and paintbrushes on standby- watch what the child is doing and make notes - A (age 2y6m) is involved in solitary play at the sand table. To start with he is happy pouring the sand from one container to the other (using PD - gross motor skills); then he notices that he can make marks in the sand using the stick (CLL - making marks) and makes them go round and round (PSR&N - shapes). After a while his interest wanes so I give him the jug of water and a paintbrush to extend his play. He uses the water to pour into the sand and is interested in how it disappears (KUW - experimenting) - he quickly asks for more (CLL - using language for questions) so I pour some from a container I have ready. He watches again, transfixed (KUW - experimenting) then suddenly pours the remainder over his head and laughs and says 'shower me!' (PSED - self care) He suddenly spots the shells hidden in the sand and digs them out one by one (PD - fine motor skills) and lines them up at the side of the tray (PSR&N - size) and says 'pretty' to me (CLL - descriptive language) - I have supplied the shells as I noted last time A played with the sand he enjoyed finding them A carries on playing with his muddy puddle for some time, until he asks me for a drink (PD - physical needs); I supply some water and he drips this into the sand as well! He then takes the paintbrush and makes a picture in the sand and tells me it is a dinosaur (CD - developing imagination), his favourite toys of the moment (PSED - likes and dislikes) and then asks for a dinosaur book (CLL - reading) and for his hands to be cleaned (PSED - self care) I down, 2 to go!! Just done this one with a 2 year old boy who's here at the moment.... now I'll have to write it up again for his folder!! You could pretend the child is 3 so you are using EYFS or Foundation sTage or translate this into Birth to 3 (sorry I use EYFS) Hope this helps! Sarahx
