Hi all, My friend has just had her first inspection since registration and was told by the inspector that children should be signed in and out by parents each day not just agree to sign each childs attendance record at the end of each week. I wondered whether any of you had heard of this? Apparently its so that if little Jonny hurts himself outside of your care, you can acount for you time with him on a daily not just weekly basis.

Hi Mel,
I had a visit from my child dev officer a couple of weeks ago and she mentioned this to me. She used to be a childminder for years herself and she gave me a brill idea to use in my setting. I will try to explain.
Buy a large diary - one with a page a day.
Get the parents to sign each child in - Name, time and parents sig and then get them to sign out too.
(At the end of the week the parent can then sign the weekly NCMA register if thats what you use)
you can also write down on each day what you intend to do - e.g. vistit to toddler group, picnic in the park, craft activities, cooking etc So parents can see at a glance
If when you are out and about you see something which you can turn into a learning activity when you get back then you change your routine for the day. You can mark this in the diary and put 'childrens choice' and highlight it. Ofsted like children to have own choice and if its highlighted so ofsted will notice it
Write risk assesment at the top of each page - tick and sign when you have done your daily risk assessment. You can have a sheet detailing what you look for in your risk assessment.
Same for weekly and monthly assessments
Every first of the month (or which date you choose) put test smoke alarm - sign when you have tested it.
If you have to buy something for childminding - add it at the bottom of the day and its their to add up at the end of the week
This diary will then have everything in it you need. A record of what you have done during the day and also ofsted can look at it and see you are recording everything.
I thought it was a good idea and i've just brought a diary they are doing July to July ones now.
Hope that makes sense
Jenny

that sounds good i'll give it a go i usually just put the children's time into my email package (outlook) times they arrive and leave but i am not very specific and round up the time i.e if they arrived at 09:20 i would put it in as 09:30
ofsted didn't pick me up on this last inspection but it doesn't mean that they won't next one i quite like the diary idea though

Hi Jenny Thanks for that. I think I will have to read your post a couple more times to get the idea - I have trouble visualising things. THought I better adopt the daily routine though as it will be one less thing to be picked up on at inspection time.
