Hiya! I am so chuffed that the new laws about smoking will come into effect from 1st July but am not sure how, if at all, these affect childminders? Will we have to display a no smoking sign in our homes? If so, you can use this one www.smokefreeengland.co.uk/files/a5_sign_sf_premises.pdfI'm hoping not though because that will look quite awful! Can someone let me know please? (I already have a policy typed up explaining that we don't smoke or allow smoking in our home, car or garden and that I would try to avoid taking children to smokey places at all times.) Lorri

Ignore me! Just found a thread saying that we don't have to put a sign up!
Still really excited about places being smoke free though! With my asthma I am really limited as to some places I can go because of the cigarette smoke and I don't want my little boy being subjected to lots of smoke and nicotine either!
YIPPEE! HOORAH!

Hi Janet I really feel for you trying to give up smoking it must be so hard. I can't even stop eating chocolate and that's a lot, lot easier! Mind you, I do suffer with a complete lack of will power! Good luck with it, it will probably do wonders for your asthma. Can you let us know how you get on? Maybe you can start a thread like the diet one if there isn't one already? I know of a couple of other people who are going to try and give up from 1st July so there must be some people on here doing the same and maybe you can all give each other support? Lorri

Hi Janet I just want to wish you the best of luck. I quit 2 years ago *June 13th 2005). I had smoked 30 a day for nearly 20 years. I won't lie it was hard, but well worth it. I have so much more energy, money and time now. I joined the click 2 quit website and found the support on there was fantastic. You are with like minded people who are all at different stages of their quit. I made some great on-line friends and we had a good laugh. the link is www.click2quit.co.ukGood luck and stay strong Love Diane

Hi Janet
Good luck I really feel for you
My sister has tried so many times and like you started really young
Her health is in a bad way and just 2 years ago at 38 had a mild stroke they did say it was due to the smoking She still can not stop though but would like to
I know what it is like though with my eating Wonder if there is anyone else who can support you with this - does anyone else smoke - does any one else want to give up ? Janet needs some support !!!
Good luck
Angel xx

Good luck Janet!! Bfriend put on a load of weight when he stopped - he said it's so hard when you want to put something in your mouth and you substitute a cigarette for chocolate etc He says you should go to smoking cessation & get everything they have to offer - for the short term while you get over the initial cravings and need for the chemicals. Then wean yourself off the nicotene gradually - he says to remember it's not a race!!! it's taken you all these years to get hooked - you're not going to get rid of the feeling in a few days/ weeks or even months...... It's been over a year for him and he still gets the odd pang!! Sarahx

My father-in-law actually went to see a hypnotist to give up. He went for two sessions about five years ago now after smoking all of his adult life and he stopped the same day and hasn't touched one since so that may be another avenue to try? He says that he doesn't get cravings either.

Hi Janet
I gave up smoking 7 years ago after having smoked since the age of 11 - I am now 49. I won't pretend it was easy, and it did take me quite a few attempts, but believe me it is really worth it. If I can do it anyone can.
The best thing you can do is keep yourself busy, and, I know it is really hard, but try not to socialize too much with people who do smoke for at least a month. That, for me, was probably the hardest thing to do but for at least 4 weeks you need to distance yourself from anything you associate with cigarettes - even if it is having a coffee (have something else instead).
Sorry, if it sounds like I am preaching but I just know how hard it can be and the few things I've suggested will make it a bit easier - guaranteed! I know because I have been there myself.
Good Luck Lucia X

Hi Janet
Good advice from Lucia.
I know it is hard to give up smoking and can be very difficult. I gave up over 12 years ago now and it was probably the hardest thing I have ever done.
My thoughts are with you
