Hi there,
Check out my recent "portfolio" thread in childminding chat. I was asking the same kind of thing and got lots of really good advice.

I am nearly there now Dee. I have now got my head around what goes in my portfolio and what should be in the prospectus. I just have my fire escape route plan to draw and then I can finally make an appointment to take in my application.
It is so hard to write all these policies and know what will work in your setting without actually putting them into practice. I think that is why I have taken so long as I don't want to start minding and then find all my policies and procedures are unworkable!!!

Hi Amanda
I am glad that you have got it all sorted out. I agree it is not always easy making policies - surely I would not have thought they would expect them to be 'masterpieces' at this stage as with most things they will have to be tweaked and amended over time.
I review all my policies at least once a year and if I find something really isn't working then I amend them as necessary - so I wouldn't worry too much - just explain that you expect that you will probably have to amend them once you start minding and have to put them into practice.
Good luck - don't forget if you need anything else we are always here

Help! I'm confused!
I'm not registered yet and am still learning and becoming aware of things but what in the world is a prospectus? The portfolio (?) is what you give to the parent is it? I will look at the other entry for that but I'm assuming that has your policies in it and permission forms? Oh, I don't know!!!
Oh no! Can't believe how confused I am now! There's an awful lot of paperwork isn't there!

A prospectus is a booklet/leaflet you give to parents detailing your services/pricing/meal planners etc... they can take this away with them when they come to see you or some parents will call and request one before they meet you.
Your portfolio is yours for showing potential customers when they come to see you. Which will contain all your policies/certificates and most of what you have in your prospectus also. It would also contain things like recommendations/references from parents etc....
