Hi all Just wondering what you all graded yourselves as on the Self Evaluation Form? Did I read somewhere on here that Ofsted will not grade you any higher than you have graded yourself? If this is correct then should I be grading myself as mostly outstanding and some goods? Not sure I can be that big-headed Thanks Diane P.S. Got THE call on Friday but was on my way to Ladies Night at the races so it wasn't a good time to talk, she is ringing me back later next week to arrange my visit

i was really put on the spot when filling out my self-evaluation form. i didn't have one beforehand and had to fill it out in front of her, whilst she was talking to me and whilst i was trying to control 3 children!
i put myself as GOOD in all areas and was awarded GOOD, but i do think next time i will grade myself as OUTSTANDING. I don't think i was at my last inspection but aspire to be by the time i'm next inspected!

My inspector said that had I not graded myself OUTSTANDING nor would she have, ( another childminder I don't like had been awarded good & I do a lot more & in my opiniion am a better childminder) - so on that basis I was higher then her! - not that I told the inspector that!!!!!!!!!! I don't know if this is an OFSTED thing or just my inspector!!! My inspection lasted 5 hours & she said that she hates giving OUTSTANDING - especially to newly registered (I was registered for 41/2 months), but try as she had she couldn't fault me! Don't think I've helped much!!!!! Good luck! Tasha

i cant really help with this sorry as i havent had an inspection since this cameinto force.
i would take from tashas story that you should grade yourself as high as poss, only thing is you will need to back it up so dont grade yourself outstanding unless you can prove it!!!
well done tasha hats off to you!!!

Tasha that post made me lol!!! I also think that I am better than a Childminder in my area and she was awarded good Think I will give myself some good and some outstanding - although I will say, as with everything, there is always room for improvement Diane

I didn't have to fill in one when I was last inspected but I would put both outstanding and good, nothing like blowing your own trumpet. I received good and I must admit I was disappointed with it at the time. She seemed to mark me down on not having enough children of different ages, perhaps I should have borrowed some. I've got two and a half years to increase my numbers and get outstanding

That's what I sai when my inspector asked me about my gradings of myself, I said, there is always room for improvement , no matter how good you are! Glad I gave you a chuckle & thanks! Tasha

The self evaluation forms make me laugh, it says "I am outstanding - my service is excellent".
Well is it outstanding or excellent?? That is two different descriptions in my opinion, either you are outstanding or you are excellent, not both!! ;D

I agree Pauline
No offence to anyone on here either who has outstanding - you do deserve it
But I have heard of childminders who have been minding for years and had everything in order yet only get a good - Do not suppose I should say "only" because good is good also
I just think the whole thing is unfair really and some inspectors do things different to others and ask different questions They should treat us all the same
Just unfair

Hi I agree i was really disappointed last year when I received good, as she only faulted me on one thing and that was on the BT3. Then I meet another childminder who had only been doing it for a few months she also got good and I know I am a better childminder then her and I was really miffed about it. I just wish all these inspectors were all the same, mine was with me for 6 hours and I received good and then another childminder who I am really good friends with, they were only with her for 55 mins and she also received good. I cannot see how you can do a full inspection in 55 mins. The whole system is unfair because one inspector could pick one thing up and another inspector wouldn't. Well that is my rant for the day. Hope you are all having a good day. Lorraine xx

i agree totally. i know childminders who have had inspectors stay for hours, and watched them prepare lunch, yet mine was only with me for about 2 hours. I got GOOD which i was pleased with, but only got one recommendation which was to peg down the swing.
they don't all sing from the same song sheet, which is a big problem and so unfair.

I gave myself goods & outstandings, the inspector's opinion differed from mine - she gave me outstanding in an area I gave myself a good & vice versa!

My inspector was only with me for under 2 hours and asked constant questions so I had no opportunity to do much with the children, then at the end she told me about an outstanding childminder she saw and was with for 5 hours and all the activities she did, and I was thinking well I do all that too, only you're not giving me a chance to show it. She did say she normally only did one inspection a day but was in the area and wanted to fit in another one to save her driving back so far! I had graded myself good for everything and so did she, I might promote myself to outstanding next time Merry

Hi Merry
Welcome to the forum you will find everyone really friendly here hope you enjoy it
I know just what you mean about the inspectors seems a bit unfair
I just think they should do away with the gradings althogether and just check that we have everything in order
As far as I am concerned anyone can " pretend " to be a good childminder during a Ofsted visit
I could tell you some real horror stories about my daughters nursery and how they get away with so much when Ofsted come out - everything is perfect - then when they have gone it is back to normal with sometimes my daughter looking after as many as 20 children all pre - school on her own ( believe me I have complained a number of times )
Anyone can be anyone they want to be to give a good impression when Ofsted come out and they seem to be handing out Outstanding more and more for very little reason these days
No offence to anyone who has outstanding I am just talking in general I think most people childminders / nurserys do deserve it so please do not shout at me - I am speaking about Ofsted in general

I think that there should be a set tick sheet for them to work from & us to know about - that we can all work from it & any addition bits that we do as indivisuals could go in our reports. I got OUTSTANDING, but was a bit upset with my report as she took notes & made comments - but none of it made it to my report & I think my report is a bit standard if that makes sense. Tasha

Tasha I agree Tasha, I'm really nervous of having my first graded inspection I would be chuffed to bits with a 'Good'. I do agree with Angel though, and this is no offence to anyone with an outstanding grade on their first inspection, but on a first inspection I feel sometimes that a minder may not have had alot of experience caring for children and maybe need to earn/prove themselves valid for an 'outstanding' grade if you understand what I mean. If it is deserved then fair enough but also as Angel says people can pretend to be anyway they like for a short time to impress. Of course I be delighted with a 'outstanding' but would hope for a good this time and and outstanding next inspection to show i have improved, where can you go to from an outstanding straight off, also i'd be gutted if i got an outstanding then dropped down to a good later on . Please anyone with outstanding first inspection grades do not be offended my my comments I am sure members of the forum more than deserve it as we no how hard you all have and do work xxx

Hi Susan I agree I worked really hard for my last inspection and I think I really deserved Outstanding I have been childminding for 4 years and was really disappointed. Like everyone says wish the inspectors where all the same it just gets me down sometimes. Especially when people have their 1st inspections and get Outstanding no offence to anybody who got outstanding you deserve it. I will shut up know don't what to upset anyone. Lorraine xx

Lorraine, I got OUTSTANDING after 4 1/2 months - I don't think you should shut up, as I think the system is unfair - I'm not going to get upset, because I truely believe I deserve my OUTSTANDING - I never had any support untill afterwards, so didn't know any things to do especially for the inspection - what she saw was a normal day & she stayed nearly 5 hours trying to fault me (her words) - because she didn't want to give me an OUTSTANDING. The whole point of the forum is to say what we think! Tasha

Hi Tasha
My inspector was there for 6 hours and she still only gave me good that is what gets me mad and other people they are only there for a lot less and they get Outstanding.
Sorry I must stop going on about it.

As far as I am concerned anyone can " pretend " to be a good childminder during a Ofsted visit that so true Angel but luckily sometimes they do get caught out, I know someone who claimed that she always used thermal mugs to protect the chldren from hot cups and made the Ofsted inspector use one, then the children piped up "what's that" when they saw it!!

I haven't had an Ofsted inspection yet - not while i've had children anyway! I am interested in the self evaluation sheets that you have been talking about. When & where do you get them from? Are they something that you get given just before an inspection?

You get the forms sent to you when your inspection is coming up.
It all comes in a pack " Are you ready for your inspection"
You have to grade yourself to what standard you think you are.
Hope that helps

When i had my inspection i got "GOOD" and was chuffed to bits. I didn't know if i was doing everything up to Ofsted standards. The inspector stayed for 5 hours and said she doesnt give out OUTSTANDING very much, but wasn't expecting that.. She was happy with everything i was doing but i didn't do as much as i do now.. All she ask me to do was get more multicultural and diversity things I said if i managed to make her 2 cups of tea would i have got Outstanding and she laughed She was really nice and made me feel really compfortable.. AngelI have worked in preschools and know how they get there grades The ladies i worked for had 2 preschools and would take staff out of one to cover the other when they had an inspection coming!!! I had to work with 2 other ladies who had tones of paperwork to get though so was left with 20 kids to occupier !! I loved my job but hated the way it was all about money and NOT the childrens care.. Thats one reason why i left as i know i could do a better job then they were willing to give!! Kate Kate
