Please coudl someone help, have rung NCMA and ofsted but they dont seem to know! my mum wants to register as a CM so she can look after my son when i go back to work next year. however she is worried that she will go through all the registration process only to be told that she cant be a CM because my step brother who lives with her was in prison last year. is this likely to affect it? he wasnt in prison for anythign really sinister but even so this will come back on the police check wont it? what will happen then? Many thanks

It really depends on what his CRB says - but if it's not child related and ofsted are happy with your mum during her pre-reg check then it should be ok the downside is that if she's only registering for minding family, Ofsted may not register her ..... she needs to re-think her availability!!!! Hi ladybird
It really depends on what he did
You will not really know until he has his crb done Then it will have it on the bottom
Then it will be up to Ofsted to decide if it was serious enough or not That is why they can not tell you yet
Best to get them done then your mom will know where she stands

Hi Ladybird,
I really dont know the answer to this one, I'm pretty sure thought that your mum would be required to look after other children not just her grandchildren to register, I'm not 100%. Can you mum not look after the children in your home ? or are you doin it to get childcare tax credits etc

Hi i registered to look after my grandchildren but have to be open to look after others outside of the family evan if its just one part time child
As for CRB check like the others have said it really depends whats on the form ofsted will then decide.

What the others have said is what I've also been told, that if you register you must be prepared to have other children as well as grandchildren.

thanks very much eveeryone. to be honest am starting to wonder if its worth everyones while mum getting registered. we want to pay mum to look after our son as she will have to give up her jobs. as i work at the council i will get £1 towards each hour of childcare. so is it worth it? it seems a long registation process and it seems like she is only doing it for us.
opp link also told me that she would need to be seen to be willin to look after other children but what exactly does this mean? would she need to actually take on another child? the thing is, she really doesnt want to. she only wants to look after dylan, she completley dotes on him
my step brother was in prison for drug dealing. he let all the family down. he is over 30 not but still living at home. he got 10 months in prison but was let out after 3 months. what are their chances of all going to plan? thing is i dont want to make her go through 5 months of trainig courses and checks all to be told that she cant register and if she does then she has to have another child as well.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOUR STEP BROTHER I CAN'T ANSWER THAT .
lOOKING AFTER CHILDREN, I THINK AT SOME STAGE THEY WOULD EXPECT HER TO HAVE OTHER CHILDREN.
I WENT THROUGH A STAGE OF ONLY HAVING MY GRANDCHILDREN
THATS OK AS LONG I WILL AT SOME TIME TAKE ON OTHERS EVAN IF IT WAS JUST FOR HALF A DAY A WEEK OR SOMETHING.
I DO MIND SEVERAL OTHERS
I DON'T KNOW HOW OR WHO WOULD CHECK UP THROUGH

Grandparents caring only for their own grandchildren need not be registered, and if they are registered, they cannot act as a registered childminder in relation to them. You can only act as a registered childminder to children to whom you are not related.

hth, i got it off the ncma website

not sure if this is relevant, but you cannot claim the childcare element of tax credits if your registered childminder is related to the child. Is on tax credits website.

Not sure about your step brother
I agree what has been said about the tax credit if your mom was not registered then you could not claim it
You say your mom is working at the moment - would she be happy to continue where she is
Would you consider taking your son to a childminder other than your mom? I know a lot of people would rather leave their children with their family but if it is going to cause you to many problems then it is another option maybe?
Childminders are very nice - after chatting to us lot I am sure you agree haha
