Hi All, Just just joined and am hoping someone can help please? I've just sent off my forms to become a childminder and Ofsted are coming around on Monday morning. I've completed the ICP course and have been trying to remember all the details in the standards. I also have three children of my own, one with special needs - but I'm seriously starting to panic now - what can I expect to happen, what sort of questions will they ask/do they go through all the cupboards etc. (I haven't done everything needed yet as I won't be up and running until at least the end of August) and how long will it take - sorry loads of questions.....!!
Thanks Kitty

hi kitty and welcome!
I've just recently had my pre reg inspection and too had all the same concerns as you!!
Firstly i would do a risk assessment on your home and do what you can before she comes, like move your bleach out of the bathroom for example, the inspector wont expect you to have everything ready, but its good if you can show them what you have done and highlight any thing that needs doing as this demonstrates you have a good knowledge on health and safety etc...
The other thing is to definately refresh yourself on all the standards as your'll be asked on them!
The registration visit is about three hours long, what he / she will do is check your identification for you and your partner if you have one. They will do a risk assessment on your home giving and then the majority of the "interview" (its a bit like a job interview!) is about all the standards, i was asked questions on all of them.
Some of the questions i was asked were
What are the four definitions of abuse ?(not a nice question i know)
What would i do if i suspected a child being abused?
What would i need to do if i have given a child medication?
How do i intend in keeping the children safe in the home and out and about? What play materials would i use ? (think about those that offer equality)
Have i thought about an Emergency plan, fire exits etc?
I was also asked to show the inspector how i intended to use my house - for example i have a large corner which i'm gonna use for role play
Mine didnt go through my cupboards as i've child locks on them, but those that didnt have locks i just said what was in there and that i was intending to lock them anyway for x y z reasons!
It was really ok, my inspector was just lovely and we had a bit of a giggle too, so they are human!
Wishing you loads of luck, let us know how it goes!!

soz hun, was also meant to mention that my eldest has aspergers, she said that it wouldnt affect my numbers as he's not on SEN, have a chat with your inspector and they will be able to advise you further!

Hi Peggy Thanks for your reply and info, it's given me more of an idea now. I have some policies printed out, adapted from the NCMA website and most of the house is child proof as our 4yr old has global dev delay as doesn't do understanding danger!!! Is it ok to write things down and refer to it during the inspection, e.g. what things I still need to do, what I have done to make things safe, which policies I still need to do etc? Thanks again Kitty

Yeah that would be fine, i did it in mine, i think the inspectors will be impressed if your well prepared and organised for the visit, as lets face think how much paper work will we be doing once we've started minding? Loads! Its good to show that your organised, show them what you've got!!
I only had my pre reg visit last thursday, so we'll probably get our registration around the same time!
This site is soooo cool, i'm starting to find myself around it and on my journey i'm coming across loads of good advice and links!
all the best hun xx

that is so strange! I wasnt able to print my stuff out either for my inspection! My computer is in my sitting room so i was able just to pull up on screen what i needed to show her.
I'm new too to the site i only joined last wednesday, its been great reading all the ideas and seeing the links to other sites for printables etc... i cant wait to get going!
Your'll be fine hun, try not to stress too much its not as bad as you think!
awww loads of luck, i'll keep an eye out for you to see how it all went!

Don't forget first impressions too Kitty, ask the inspector for her id and lock the door behind her, just as you would do when admitting visitors when actually minding!
Good Luck, Donna

Thank you sooo much for all your help and advice. I had my inspection this morning, the lady was lovely and it went really well. I really couldn't have done it without all the help and advice via this site. She said that I said all the right things, had loads of good ideas and our house seems mega childproof (it has to be with our 4yr old who has learning difficulties and has no concept of danger!!!). So she's gone away with the paperwork. She did say it would be 12 weeks for the crb checks, I thought it was four weeks, so now have to start finding some huge amounts of money to pay the mortgage which is due again shortly (been on payment hol), until I can get up and running.

Glad everything went well Kitty.
The CRB checks may be back quicker than that but I think she told you 12 weeks so not to get your hopes up.
