Charging when children are at nursery

There have been a few comments about charging when children are in nursery / playschool of late

I did say that I was lucky enough to have another child to take the place of the little boy whom is at nursery so I have never charged for the time the little boy is at nursery

I do think that you are right to charge just that up till now I have been lucky enough not to do that


It got me thinking though I could be in that position myself this time next year when one of the children I mind goes to nursery I do not know what my situation will be then so it could end up that I need to charge for the time he will be at nursery when he start

My question is ...

The parent whose child will be going to nursery in the future gets working tax credits so they / the tax office pay a large percentage of her childminding fees
If he is at nursery though they will not pay her money to pay me because I will not be having the child and I know she would not be able to pay me herself for hours that I am not really having him if you get what I mean

Does anyone mind a child that is in nursery ?
Do you charge for the time the child is there?
Who pays the fees does the parent have to pay themselves?
If you do have a child in nursery and you do charge and your parent is receiving working tax credits can anyone tell me how this works. Do the working tax credit still pay them for their childcare fees?

Thats where my soft side comes in I'm afraid .... example how can I charge for something that I'm not doing if the parent is on a low income and receiving no help ??

I am one of the minders who had problems with parents paying while child is at nursery and according to her she spoke to the NCMA and they told her that parents only need to pay the minder in cases where the minder drop off and picks up the child and if they minder is liable for picking up if child is ill.

So in my case where she has older children to drop off at school if she had taken the morning space then she would not have to pay me until 11.30 picking up time but as it was she chose afternoon nursery so her child could continue going to the clubs we go to(her words), so this means I would be dropping off and picking up so she should have paid me,this is what caused the trouble,this is when she phoned the NCMA.

I'm going to phone the NCMA and find out what they say,I will post their reply for us all to share.

hi i have a child at nursery and wot i do is charge a reduced rate for when the child is at nursery because i have to take him and collect him and when he is of nursery then it is back to normal fee hope this helps

Hi everyone,
I look after a child 5 mornings a week and 2 afternoons a week. He has just started attending pre school on 2 mornings, I take him and pick him up and it would be me that would collect him if he became ill etc. So I still charge the normal fee because my services are still being used and the place is being taken.

One thing springs to mind.....when my daughter was being minded, my CM charged a retainer as she dropped dd to nursery and picked up. On the forms I filled in for working family tax I had to fill in what I payed weekly to a Reg CM, so the parent would declare that therefore hopefully getting funding.......
