I have just read my local early years childcare news & it tells me that under the new fire regulations 2006 I should of done a written risk assessment. I had never heard of this. Has anyone else done one & give me some advice?

I've not heard of a risk assessment for fire regs.
I have a fire procedure detailing what would happen in the event of a fire but nothing else.

Hi I did a risk assessment with the help of the local fire brigade They will come out to your home and do the risk assessment for you along with recommendations for escape routes and procedures. They also will fit 10 year fire alarms (they did this even thought the ones that I had were quite new). The kids loved it (so did I ), they came and parked their fire engine in front of the house - all the neighbours came out in a panic and all the kids got to have a look inside and try the helmets on - BRILLIANT!! Contact your local fire station and ask them to come out and do a Home Risk Assessment, explain that you are a registered Childminder. All businesses now have to have one done, we seem to be in limbo as we are self employed and working from home, the assessment they do is for you personally and not a business risk assessment but it is still a good idea and great fun too. Love Diane x

I also have posters about fire hazards aimed at children and I also use books that highlight danger, 'Dinosaurs Beware' is one of the favourites.

This is exactly how the article reads; It is your responsibility as a childcare provider to undertake written risk assessments to comply with the new fire regulations 2006. Information to help support this requirement can be found by calling 08451 221155. That to me is more than having a fire evacuation plan & practicing fire drills??

I think it must depend on the area you live in. I have recently attended a course through Sure Start called "Fire Safety for Childminders" It was recommended on this course that we had our homes fire risk assessed (see previous post)
I have a certificate from Sure Start and a Home Risk Assessment from the fire service, along with booklets, posters, a book called Francis the Firefly (Brilliant) and a game for the children to play about the fire hazards in the home.
I just contacted my local fire service and they came out to us. It is something that anyone can do as it is not for business use it is for home use.
Regards Diane
