miffy and i went on a training day yesterday which was about communication friendly spaces. so a cfs is a space specifically designed for the children in your setting where they feel safe and free to communicate apparently not many settings are encouraging children to speak and 50 % of under 5s start school with speach development problems, the research done so far has been done in children's centres and schools and only a few childminders.
the aim of this particular training was to go back and tell the trainers what they are doing right or wrong then she will begin to train childminders on how to use a cfs in their settings.
so it could be a net curtain draped over the back of your sofa and hooked behind the radiator or it could be a screen or pop up tent positioned so that the children can access the area when they need some quiet reflective time we were advised to just put a few toys/books in the area to give the children food for thought but also to allow the children to take special things in with them. we have to record what we have done and how successfully it worked the go back in january and discuss our findings with the trainers and then they will analyse the info we give them

i am adding this bit in so it doesn't make the bit above too long
one of the questions we were asked was what do we as adults do to unwind at the end of a day
miffy and i gasped and looked at each other with horror do you think we could admit to what we do at the end of our working day
well actually yes we announced to a room full of 20+ childminders that we access childminding help forum and were very proud to admit it (well we were really a little embarrassed but we did tell everyone )

Was it a bit like being in AA?? LOL It's odd, this communication thing..... First we're told to play with children... then we're told to leave them alone to play their own games and spend time observing them but only join in if they want us to.... now we're not talking to them enough!! The ones I look after never stop talking... not sure they need a special place to go.... they just talk ! Maybe cos I have time to listen and families are so busy....? Sarahx

I think one of the ideas was that research (not sure whose) had shown that children's language develops best when they are able to use their imaginations and the environment is important to that so you have communication friendly spaces.
It was quite interesting and we did "spread the word" about this forum but I have to confess (seeing as Mandy didn't) that we are joining another forum which is how we will keep in touch with the trainers and some of the other people on the course to let them know how we're getting on.
Will let you know how we get on

Will let you know how we get on Miffy thanks for adding the bit about the research miffy the woman who ran the training is also the woman who has been going to different settings and she did highlight the difference between school settings and childminders was the ability to talk to the children more one to one. i don't think it was a critisism of childminders at all more an awareness of the country's failing as a whole

did anyone read the bit about cfs in their who minds. it explains a bit more what miffy and i are talking about. we both have to set up a communication friendly space in our homes and report back to elizabeth jarman how it all went, did it encourage the kids to talk to each other, did they play in the space or just run in and out that sort of thing we've been told to record it all in a nice book and include photos
of course being me haven't set mine up yet i'd better get on with it as we feedback on the 5th january

pauline you'll be glad to know that elizabeth jarman is not as efficient as you and the forum still hasn't been set up either.
