OK... You need: 1) Piediatric first aid course - £ Varies from area to area, but mine cost £80. 2)ICP/Unit 1 Diploma Home-based childcare. Again the price varies but average is £80/£100. I did mine home-based for £150. 3)In the coming years you will need a level 3 qualification. This will cost approx £1000/£2000. (Again I did mine home-based, so costs more)! Depending on which area you live in there are various funding options available for example I am doing the full diploma in home-based childcare which has been funded by the transformation fund & my first aid was paid for by my start up grant! You need to ring your local council & ask to speak to the early yeas department & find out what's available re funding! Hope this helps Tasha

i didnt get funding as such but i did get all my courses paid for. But i dont get a start up grant to buy toys, prams, highchairs etc with. Just depends on the area you live in because my sister in law gets a grant but has to pay for her first aid training and ICP course etc

OMG I didn't realise training courses were so expensive I have only ever done the first aid and the ICP course but that was years ago, if I have to pay that much I will have to give it up as I just couldn't afford it.

You intially have to do your first aid course (ours are funded by early years very heavily some are £65 some even less) and your ICP no idea on cost as the old breifing sessions they used to do here were free but would think the cost would be funded by early years again think it is to 75%,
both of these are to be done within 6 months of registering (I think)
There is talk that all childminders will have to have a level three within 5 years of registering (again I think). The choce of which one will be down to, you but bear in mind what you want to do later on in life, will depend on what one you take. Again in our area you can be funded completely via the transformation fund but think that has to be by end of next year (help someone is that right). You can take any level three whether DHC if intending to stay a childmidner or NVQ 3 which will be more accepted if wanting to go down the nursery route later on.
Our Early years are very good and funding for some of the fees is usually available. Most of the other trainings on offer are free with a cost of £10 if you don't show.
As Tasha said correspondence courses are available but much more expensive in our area the ICP when I did mine was £30 with funding for £22 so a cost of £8 to me - unfortunately i couldn't do it that way so went through the NEC to do mine at £150 they would only fund me £22 as it was on offer locally!!!!

I guess it's an investment and hopefully I'll get the funding or start up grant from my borough (wandsworth in London)

Leics are fab too. I got a grant to pay for set up. First Aid was funded and so was Unit 1 ICP.
I am paying for food hygiene £25 and child protection £30. I have NNEB so thats sorted.
Didnt cost me much at all...probably spent about £200 so far on toys and bits.

Stoke are also fantastic for courses, haven't paid for one yet, they even pay us for attending them.
I've always had to pay before in Southampton and Oxford so can't believe I now get them free
