An NVQ is a nationally recognised qualification. So, if as a childminder you did your NVQ you could then potentially get work in a Nursery or other childcare / educational setting. The DHC is purely for childminders and is only recognised within that industry. Hope that helps and no you are not being stupid, it is not made clear. Can you see the smiles above when you are typing a post? If you can then you just click on the one that you want and it appears If you can't see them then I am sorry I have no idea, but perhaps you could pm Pauline, she would be able to help. Diane x

Sorry, forgot to say - if you are registering as a childminder then you still need to do the ICP part of the DHC, it does not matter how many qualifications you have OFSTED insist that this must be done.

I have been registered since 1998 did ICP when it piloted was going off what other childminders in my area are doing (none of them have done NVQ3) didn't want to be left behind if you know what I mean but also don't want to do it if it will just be for the sake of it. Hope you get my drift. Thanks for the tip on the smilies weren't sure if it would work cos it just shows as a symbol at first

You basically need to do a level 3 either NVQ or DHC by 2010. I did the DHC, as unit 1 is the same as the ICP which is compulsary & I have no intention of working in anyother setting! Tasha

Hi everyone I'm Lesh, I've just joined the forum today and already have had some great help and advice from people on here. Just a quick note to say that I started the Diploma in Home-based Childcare at the start of the September term. I finish this part of it in December and will carry on every term until next December when I will have completed the full Diploma. You have to do all sections of the diploma (which includes the ICP as the first part) in any order to receive the qualification. I am really enjoying it and its so interesting sharing experiences, views and opinions on a variety of issues. I'm not really that academic but I have really taken to this course and can't wait to do the end of term assignment!!! How sad!!! Lesh x
