Hiya everyone,
I've just sent my dox off to Ofsted so have a long way to go yet, but I was wondering apart from the First Aid and normal course we have to take, what other training would be advisable and also do you put it all down as a taxable item? Also, have any of you filled your places with little other training or do parents really go for a long list of qualifiactions?
Many thanks! Debbie

i have been on 24 courses i have just had a look in my folder, the courses are free through my early years dept , but i wouldnt say that i have got children because of this, i have been told that i am down to earth, and give parents a comfortable feeling, so that doesnt have anything to do with the ammount of courses i have been on xxxxxxxx

I do try and do some courses as and when I can but I don't think that I have ever put parents off because I haven't done more. Most parents want to know that you have your first aid but after that, I think their choice is based on gut feeling.

i agree i dont think it puts parents off if you havent done any extra training.
up until now i have only done icp and first aid, i have now booked myself on safeguarding children course in september, actually looking forward to doing it because i think it will be interesting but a bit nervous too!!

I must admit I have never done any courses until this year. I find it hard as hubby works shifts so he's not always there for children. Now I try to do the one's on a Sat, Ofsted to like you to do them although you don't have to. Done Health & Safety and booked onto safe guarding children level 1 and level 2 in Oct and Nov. In Stoke they are free too so this helps as you are not out of pocket.

Hi Debbie,
I think it also depends upon how confident you are working with children, whether you are going to make a career out of childminding and how motivated you are to improve the service that you offer.
If you are thinking of making a long-term career out of childminding then it is a good idea to take advantage of whatever free training you can get in your area, particularly training that Ofsted recommend, ie Safeguarding Children (which I thought was mandatory) along with training in Birth to Three Matters or the EYFS which ever you can get where you are.
And it is also a good idea to get any training done before you start with children if you can, because you will be way to busy after!!!!!

Hi Debbie
I think it is up to you - they will start to send you dates and times of courses so you can book them
Blimey Janet you have done 24 - think I am spending to much time on the forum haha where do you get the time
To be honest I have not done that many courses because they are always around 7 in the evening and I just could not get to them when I finish work at 6.30
I have never known it to put parents off and I am always full with a waiting list
If you are new to it I do not think it would hurt though to do as many as you can before you get the children and find you do not have the time Just gives you that extra experience and knowledge when it is all new to you
Good luck
