I'm just waiting for my course to arrive, should be here next week nec told me. I was just wondering how other people have got on with it? And if anyone can give me any pointers such as books that would be helpful. It's been a long time since i've had to really study. Any help will be gratefully received. Thanks.

Not done this course, sorry! When I did my NVQ there was a book I bought from play.com specially written for it - and I just used that plus google an awful lot to pull up topics for background reading! I also got on first name terms with my local librarian - they'll save all sorts for you if you're nice to them! As for studying, it was really hard to start with, but I gave myself diaried pockets of time through the week when everything else just had to wait - it was me, a notebook & pen, a computer and total dedication... it was hard to start with, but soon became a habit I also spent a lot of time at my local school borrowing their files to use for reference and asking questions - they didn't seem to mind. For a couple of bits, I needed extra evidence, so I went in as a parent helper for a few sessions and got the info I needed that way Good luck and ask if you want to know anything else! Sarahx

I'M at present doing ecp which was replaced by diploma in home based childcare
the books i use are; "Childminding" by Sheila Riddall-Leech "Observing children" Carole Sharman Wendy Cross and Diana Vennis "Managing Childrens Behaviour" Sheila Riddall-Leech "Planning play and the early years" Penny Tassoni Karen Hacker NVQ3 Early years care and education
Plus several books on early years activities
The 2 books i use most are "childminding" and"Planning play and the early years"
If you buy any of these check what edition they are and year some of the books have several editions
I got some of mine of ebay and the others either from Amazon or Wh smith (online)
You will get a list of recommded reading when you get your pack i do mine with NEC.
Good luck with it all

Thanks for the replies I'm sure the list of books will be helpful once I get started. I've been on amazon and smiths websites and noticed there is a book with the same title as the course so I presume that one would be helpful. Thanks again Carol x

Hi Charley I'm doing the course at the moment. Have passed unit 3 (which is the one they suggest you start with) I got a B which I am really chuffed with!!
In the middle of CACHE assignment for unit 4 then only 2 units left!
I have found it really good and have learned a lot. So far I have only bought the sheila riddal leach book (the one you mentioned) but I have also done research on the net and used bits of articles from the ncma mags "who minds"
Good luck with your studies, maybe we can compare notes!!! Or at least give each other some moral support ;D

Some moral support will be good as I think I'm going to need it. Of course I'll be here for you too although may not be of much help as you started before me but I'll do what I can. As children are in bed now I'll have a look at it, that is if I ever get off this forum. Looks like I'll be book buying the weekend. Well done on getting a B and good luck with the next unit. Carol x

I have just submitted Unit 4 - my tutor has told me that she has had a read through of it & although she hasn't properly graded it yet she thinks it's probably a B - I hope it is! To be honest - I'm sooo relieved my first assignment in 10 years! Am now doing unit 3 - the one I am dreading the most is unit 5! Tasha

Well done. I must admit I haven't properly looked at it yet cause of the children but I do aim to sit down with it over the weekend. No doubt I will be asking for loads of help when I do get started. Good luck with unit 3, I'm sure you'll be fine Carol x

Don't be fazed by it Charley. Read through what is required in each section E1-9 and A-D. Use the pointers that they suggest in it. Shelia Riddell Leachs book Diploma in Homebased Childcare goes along with the course and you can find loads of info in there.
I am happy to help if anyone wants help etc. I must admit that I was rather fazed at first but so long as you work through and keep on top of it, its not too bad. Somehow I have managed A's all the way through so I guess I'm doing something right! Oh yes, they like quotes and references.
I am now on my last unit which will start in December - WHOO HOO ;D

Hi Carol Thanks for your pm. I had an email from CACHE informing me about the NEC and had a brief look at them on the internet and sounds as though it could be the answer to my problem. I've sent an email to my local Early Years department to find out if I am entitled to funding. Not looking forward to the prospect of studying as haven't done anything this intense in 22 years. Maybe we could all help each other. Rachelle x

You're as bad as me, I haven't studied for 25 years but I think once we get started we'll get into the swing of things. I'm not saying it'll be easy but we can support each other and there are others doing it as well. Anything you need to know just ask.
