Well I've finished the on-line course for Awareness of Child Abuse or Neglect - Foundation and thought I'd share my experience. They say it takes around 2 hours but I spent about 3 hours spread over two days. You can take longer if you wish, it's entirely at your own pace and you can save it and return at the same point later. I found it easy to follow and the instructions were clear. The information is presented in different ways - you listen, read and take small tests along the way. Although I had done Child Protection Courses in the past I still found there were some things I'd either forgotten or didn't know. I think it would be a great introduction for anyone who has had no Child Abuse Awareness training. At the end of the course you should be able to: Understand the various types of child abuse and neglect Identify the signs and what to look for Know how to ask questions if you suspect a child is being abused know what steps to take if you suspect abuse is happening know what happens after a referral is made to Children's Service (Social Care) Know what to do if a child or an adult discloses abuse You can go back through the training at any point if you feel you want to refresh your memory. At the end of the training and once you are confident to take it, there is a 15 question test, mainly multiple choice. You need 75% to pass (I got 100% - had to ponder on a couple though!) If you pass you are then directed to a print page where you can print off a certificate. The course is PC only, they will not work on Apple Mac computers, although they are working to change this. Thanks Angel.
Back to your earlier question.
I really don't think you could fail to be honest. If you take in what the training is saying and make notes as you go along.
The answers to the questions were mainly commonsense and I think it would be hard to fail!
But I will find out.

What happens if you fail the test do you have to start all over again and pay again? Angel x Hi Angel You just go back and study some more then take the test again, this is what it says in the information I got:
If you do not achieve the required pass mark you should revisit the training material and then take the test again once you feel ready. When you have achieved the pass mark, you will be given the option to print a certificate by clicking on the "Print available certificates" link at the top of your training record.I assume it means you can do that as often as necessary until you pass.

It's nice Angel, doesn't look home made or anything!
I think I'll print it again though on some nice thick paper or thin card, like certificates are, the one I did was just on ordinary paper.
It has a 'fancy' college heading, date and course title, plus your name and learner ID - so if anyone needed to check that it was a genuine certificate and course they would be able to through the college.
The food hygiene course is different though, you can't print the certificate for that, the course is certificated by the Royal Institute of Public Health so it has to be verified and sent to you by post.
I'm leaving the food hygiene course until next week as I'm very busy as the moment and don't want to rush it.

8-)Hi all Congratulations Pauline, on passing the course, I took the same two courses as you a couple of weeks ago, and like you passed first time, they are really ideal as you can go at your pace and do it at home, I also took notes as I went along, and was able on a couple of the child awareness course questions look back on the notes which helped me to get 100%. Like you said if you dont get the 75% mark you can restudy at your leisure and resit the test again, which helps if you have hubby or the any children around nagging in your ear just as you are sitting the test. Hi all, Yes it certainly is better then having to go out in the evenings after a hard day with the little ones, or taking up are well earned weekends with courses, we can spend what we save from having to pay for a tutor or classroom on the little ones or maybe just once in a while treat ourselves, ha ha Mandy

Hi there,
Just got on and read this one - was this course £25 too? I've only just sent forms off to Ofsted so not done any courses - would this one and the food hygiene be impressive to Ofsted?
Thanks

Thanks Hi Debbie This one is £30, Find out more here: Child Abuse Awareness Coursealthough they are not yet compulsory I think that Ofsted will be impressed that you are doing them without 'having to', if you get what I mean.

Think I will give this one a go. Would it be out of my own pocket or is it classed as an expense??

Hi Susan, My pre reg lady, said its the best time to do these courses if you can, before you get busy, just keep any paper work to go in your expenses, where I am you can get the courses for free, but need to attend a college type thingy xx

Thanks for that. I'll do it online and put it on my expenses. I'm starting a course in September which will be one evening a week, I work weekends at the hospital and often babysit in the week so just don't have time to do anymore. Doing a course online would be much easier for me.

Susan x The more you can do while you haven't got children to worry about the better, you will be so busy then you won't have time for anything! (Except the forum of course

Thanks Pauline. I was just a bit confused as to how far before starting childminding you can claim expenses. I haven't a clue when I'm going to start as I'm waiting for calls and conscious of the fact that I'm having expenses before getting a wage. Didn't know how bad this would look on my annual accounts report. Am I making sense???
Thanks Susan x

Yes I know what you mean Susan but if you put everything down it will just show on your accounts that you are currently working at a loss which the inland revenue will accept because that happens sometimes, especially with new businesses just starting up.

I'll do the course in the next week or so then.
Thanks for the reassurance. Susan x

I didn't know NCMA did a child protection course. As far as I know Ofsted are happy to recognise all courses provided they meet the criteria for training.

Just purchased the course, waiting for the material to come through......how long does it take??? xx I did the Food Hygiene course online and once purchased you go straight through and do the course and exam which takes 2-3 hrs. I think you can keep going back to it. I assumed the Child Abuse Awareness online course was the same. Purchase and do it straight away. Susan x
