Hi guys,
Although I have only just registered and received my certificate, I have realised that I should really have registered my husband as an assistant, not just as another over 16 in the house. As he is a teacher, our 3 boys can be his responsibility during the holidays , but I can't have extra children as it stands (insurance) and it would help with emergency contact etc. Does anyone know what I have to do / how long it takes to get him changed to assistant status. Also, how do your ratios improve - I have heard it increases your under 5 ratio? Would love to hear your comments! Thanks
Mel

Hi Mel
As I understand it an assistant just has to be CRB checked and it is up to you to ascertain wether or not they are deemed 'suitable'. The only problem is that they can't be left on their own with the children but you can have your number of children increased. If you want to leave them in sole charge then they would have to take the ICP course & first aid course the same as you did.
I did phone Ofsted because my daughter is off work until February (having had a baby) and we thought it might not be a bad idea if she were to help me while she is off work. Ofsted told me that I can download a CRB form form their website and to just send it to them with a covering letter.
I hope this info helps - I think I've understood correctly but see what some of the other ladies say first.

Hi Mel, I've just gone through the process of registering my husband as my assistant so hope I can help. Even though he'd already had a CRB check when I registered, many years ago, we still had to do another. We completed a CM2 form, he was then sent a form to apply for the Enhanced CRB. He can have sole care of the children during my absence ONLY if parents give written permission We can have more children when working together including 6 under 5's and two under 1's but this might vary from minder to minder He doesn't have to do the ICP course to have sole care, and they only recommend that they do a First Aid course, but he will anyway as he wants to be fully prepared when alone with the children. The whole process took just 3 weeks and 3 days, but it probably varies from area to area. Hope that helps, any more questions just ask away.

Just another question - my bf is currently registering. Started the process in mid-March and still going..... He's had his Ofsted pre-reg (they said ok) and is doing a first aid Registration stalled waiting for his son's CRB - for last 6 weeks!! and my CRB (I registered 13 years ago and never had one) for last 3 weeks!!! Sick of waiting tbh - he's got a CRB (well, 4 actually, as he's a school chef!!) Can i just get him done as an assistant? What are the tax implications? How much can I pay him? Any advice gratefully received Sarahx

Hi Thanks for the advice - I phoned ofsted today to make sure. He would only be looking after our 3 boys to free me up to take extra holiday care children. Having said that, this is all a bit ambitious as I don't have any mindees at all yet!

Hi Mel
I think you are right to be one step ahead
Minding can start off slow but once it takes off it could snowball so if you have things already in order you will be thankful
Hope things start moving for you soon

As regards tax and NI - I understand that if you 'employ' someone to work for you then you are responsible for calculating their tax and NI and must pay them the minimum wage. Not fully sure if it would be the same for a partner or whether you could just pool the money as it will be for both of you anyway.

Hi nanan, I think you may need to register him but, just for info, when I phoned ofsted they did make it clear that registering an assistant does not automatically increase your numbers. You have to write to the regional ofsted office stating that you are currently registering an assistant and you would like to ask for a variation of terms to your registration. I think they don't automatically grant an increase without assessing your individual situation eg making sure you have the house space etc. Hope this makes sense!

Mel is right, it's no automatic on the increase in numbers.
We had to calculate the space per child using the ratio in the standards book and then write and tell them how many extra children we wanted. Strange but they suggested we had MORE than we had asked for!
