Hi
Can anybody help? When do you need to complete tax forms? I have only just received my registration cert. but, as yet, don't have any children to mind - I still need to advertise etc. I have been asked by a previous employer if I would work for them for a couple of hours every day until I start to have children. They will be paying me by business cheque (they are self-employed) but don't really want to use the PAYE system as it will only be on a casual basis so is not worth the hassel. This actually suits me as I will be earning while I wait so to speak. The problem is the Tax form. When do I need to notify them? I know it is a stupid question but when i phoned them previously the said that i didn't need to notify them until I have my first child. Now I don't know whether to let them know straight away or still wait until I have my first child and then just include the other job as extra income (is there a place to enter that on the tax form)? I want to do things properly but am really confused. Please help? Lucia

I advised the IR back in January and I am nowhere near registered yet. The amount of hours I have put in on my application I have probably been working an average of 16 hours a week. I also received employed income last tax year and so all the "expenses" i have had for my childminding business (and there have been a lot) have helped to bring that amount down. My husband has an accountant for his business so she has been giving me advice. I have been able to use some of the allowances, for example heating and electric as I am working from home. Although obviously not the wear & tear element as I don't have any children yet.
We were advised right at the beginning of the process to let the IR know. I think you can use receipts from 3 months before you were registered as self employed. Not sure about your old employer paying you, think this is a bit of a grey area.
I am not sure how applicable this is to you but in the area I live all the paperwork I intend to use has had to go in with my application form, which is a lot of work so I have been able to be classed as SE all this time.
Hope this helps

That is a bit of a tricky one. Normally you wouldn't have to register as self employed until you start working and then you have 3 months to do so before you are liable for a fine (£100). I don't know how you are going to sort out the extra money you are getting bearing in mind that the people you are working for are not paying tax on it either as it is casual. I wouldn't like to advise you either way as I could be totally wrong I think you might be better off seeking the advice of an accountant (which will cost you money!!) or ring the tax office to see what they say - they may recommend that you register now and list these earnings in your childminding income - I don't really know . Let us know how you got on Dee

Hi
Thanks for the advice. I think i will give the tax office a ring on Monday. I'm sure I can't be the only person who has or is doing two jobs - or maybe they just don't declare it! I can't be that dishonest though so i think I better be upfront with them. I'm not really earning alot so it will probably still come under the minimum tax (I hope).
