First of all, Hello! I am new to the site so will fill you in on a bit of info about me. I decided to become a childminder 18 months ago and am hoping to become registered in the New Year. It has taken this long because i moved house and had an extension built! However i have been working hard developing my business by writing up all of my policies, putting together my prospectus, creating adverts, doing training courses, basically as much ground work as possible, so that when i fill out the all important application, i'll be ready to go. Anyway the only real question that has been bugging me is the child ratio. I have a daughter who is 3, therefore i am aware that i am allowed no more than 2 more kids under 5 and only one of those may be under 12 months. However, my daughter goes to playgroup from 9.30 until 12, she is collected by her gran with whom she spends the afternoon with (until 4pm) Can i have another child as well as the one under 5 and the one under 12 months from 8am until 4pm (this would mean that from 8am until 9.30am i would be over my numbers because of my daughter) is this allowed? Sorry if the above is a bit of a ramble, but its hard to explain in writing.
Advice would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

No it wouldn't be allowed...which is a pain I know (my son is 2)! You will probably be allowed 3 5-8's as well (depends on space). You can have 6 over 8's as long as it doesn't affect the care of the under 8's. This can make you very busy during holiday periods!!! Tasha PS Welcome to the forum!

hi Emma, welcome to the forum, in answer to your question, you have to ask yourself who is responsible for your daughter while at nursery? if she is ill, school holidays etc who will have to collect her if there unforeseen circumstances. if she has to come home this will put you over your numbers and affect your insurance and you would be over your numbers, also if you took someone on from 8 to 9.30 this will also affect your insurance. so my advice would be do not take on children unless your within your numbers.

HI Emma and welcome to the forum! Like the others say, you are responsible for your child - regardless of where she is.... You could look into taking on older children - before and after schoolers can be quite lucrative if you take on a few and they're not usually much trouble if you don't mind bulk cooking and the odd row over the computer! Talk soon Sarahx

Thanks for the replies, glad I now have clarification!
I thought as much. I hadn't planned to take on children during that time, but needed to ask the question.
Am getting quite excited about starting now, as i have been in an office job for far too long and feel that is about time i began my vocation in life, instead of hating my job and only being in it for the money! (which is naff anyway!!)
Thanks again!
