I have also very recently become registered but am unable to begin minding until Dec '07 (due to my upcoming redundancy from my office job). I'm really looking forward to the change in direction but at the same time have worries about filling my places and whether I'll be able to make a decent living. I guess only time will tell! I successfully completed the First Aid training a couple of weeks ago and next week will be the 3rd part of the CACHE ICP course at college. Fingers crossed all goes well

Hi bubbly, welcome to the forum, good luck with your icp course, you'll find lots of useful information on the forum, i look forward to chatting to you xx Thanks very much. Everyone here seems very nice and helpful. I've already gained a lot of useful information and look forward to making new friends. I'm currently coming out of a dog-eat-dog office environment (due to redundancy) where the atmosphere has become increasingly nasty and competitive over the years. It's a big change as I've been in my current job for 21 years. I've come to realise a bitchy office environment is not something I want to enter into again - my personality is more suited to a 'caring' role. My own son (aged 6) has always gone to a childminder and I've reached to conclusion it's something I really want to do myself. I'll be terribly disappointed if it doesn't work out but my redundancy payout should sustain me for approx a year without a salary. Unfortunately my partner also got made redundant a week ago so it's an anxious time for us right now.

Why doesn't he register as well?...There's a big thing at the moment about boys not having enough present role models in their everyday lives...could be your unique selling point...even if he gets another job...it's always useful for when he is around! Tasha ;D

Tasha's right - my partner registered a while ago and parents like the fact there's a male influence in the household.....
He does it between school catering - so he can work with me after school and in the holidays... it's a thought!

Welcome Bubbly, from me too. Sorry to hear you are both to be made redundant it must be a really anxious time for you. Although in a few years you might decide it was the best thing that ever happened.
Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I was pregnant and under notice of redundancy ( after working in an office for 20 years) which for me was exactly what I wanted. Then the company decided to withdraw the offer!! I too decided I had had enough of office politics and working to someone elses routine so i took a years maternity leave and never went back. I am not registered yet as we work very differently in Wales however from all the research, planning and training I have been doing, I know working with children is very definitely what I want to do. It may not always be in the role of a childminder but who knows.
Tasha is right, why don't you get your husband to register. you don't have anything to lose. My husband is registering with me. Not that he is going to be a full time minder like me but as he is self employed and usually works nights he is usually around for both morning and afternoon school runs and when the children come home from school. He can also take hols when he wants so can be around during school holidays just as a back up.
Hope things go well for you
Amanda xx

Thanks everyone. Some good suggestions are coming across. I'd never thought about my partner registering but it's certainly worth considering. He'd definitely come in handy for the school run as I'm a non-driving driver. What I mean is, I've held a driving licence for 12 years but haven't driven myself for most of those. I'm thinking of doing a refresher course to get back into the swing, as it's definitely an advantage being able to drive. My partner is soon to begin training to become a driving instructor but the bureaucracy/CRB checks has taken 6 months alone! Hopefully he can start in another week or two.
It's certainly an anxious time being a household without an income but hopefully we can turn the experience into something positive and look upon it as new beginnings for us both.
I'm in the process of getting my advertising into place. I'm listed on Yell.com, displaying cards in local shops and the library, and this coming week should see me on the Opportunity Links website. I'll be listed in the local Yellow Pages but not until July '08 when the new book is published. I've had one enquiry already but sadly she didn't follow it up. I guess you get used to being let down and I'm quite prepared for that happen.
