I've been having a read of the standards for EYFS. I know they don't come into effect until Sept 08 but thought I'd start changing things over as it will have to be done one day.
After reading the 'medicines' section (page 26) It leads me to think that we will only be allowed to administer 'prescribed' medicines and will not be allowed to give such things as Calpol /teething get etc. even WITH parents permission because it reads:
Medicines should only be taken to the setting when this is essential and settings should only accept medicines that have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist or pharmacist.
While a pharmacist might suggest to a parent that Calpol would be useful there is never anything actually written on the bottle like there is when you get it from the doctor, so we couldn't even cover ourselves like that could we?
Any thoughts?

Where's that written Pauline? Page 26 is dispositions & attitudes! I haven't got as far as I would like with the EYFS! I did note on page 07, that (1.13) - we are supposed to liase, "...patterns of attendance will be a key factor in planning For children who attend more then one setting, practitioners must ensure effective continuity and progression by sharing relevant information with each other & parents. Looks like we'll need a pemission form! Right have now spoken to the NCMA about this & they say that there are reams of queries & that because the EYFS is for everybody - there is going to be sections that aren't applicable to childminders & OFSTED will let them know what's what in the Sping of 2008 & then NCMA will let us know & poduce new paperwork if needed, so that we can comply! Hope this helps! Tasha

The one that made me laugh was that children aren't supposed to come into contact with laundry facilities!!! Like where else am I supposed to put my washer and tumble drier? I got them plumbed into the outbuilding cos they're not supposed to be in the kitchen with the food hygiene regulations, but we use the outbuilding as a downstairs loo! Suppose I could always stop doing the washing while I'm working .... but my boy has chronic eczema which makes my washing pile 3 stories high every day.... Will ask when she comes next week... any more questions sling this way and i'll make a list! Sarah x

So if one of the babies can not have teething gel on all day because I may not be able to use it even with parents permission What am I supposed to do - let them cry all day ?
Oh no !!!
It is madness
I wonder who actually thinks these rules will work We are childminders for goodness sake
I have not gone all through my standards yet but I will try to get a look at it over the weekend

It's a conflict isn't it, we can't soothe their pain, even though their parents would wish it, yet we are supposed to care for them according to their parents wishes. Catch 22!

I think even if a parent left no instruction for teething gel and a baby was distressed natural instinct would take over and you would want to comfort and ease the pain Some babies are fine when cutting their teeth but others are not
How you are supposed to ignore this beats me
Also the calpol - one of the little ones I minds is suffering dreadful with back teeth and very flushed and miserable Imagine not being able to ease their discomfort with calpol
Mad it really is

Page 23 says, "....comments from parents are incorporated into records" I already do this, but I know some of you don't. Also, ..."For each specific outing, providers must carry out a full risk assessment" (Page 24). Do you think this includes school run, park (everyday things)? Tasha

You couldn't let a child suffer all day will I couldn't and wouldn't. xx No you couldn't so I assume if Ofsted enforce the rule then we would have no option except to say that we can't care for children on the day they require non prescribed medication!! Try telling parents that little Johnny can't come today because he needs teething gel or Calpol, there would be uproar!

Well at the end of the day ...
I think in some situations parents should have the last word !!!!!
I do not think if it was my child I would like Ofsted telling me what I can and can not let a childminder adiminster to my child
It is down to the parent I would have thought?

yet again this proves that allowing an organisation that oversees education take over care is ridiculous, i have NEVER thought ofsted should be our regulatory body and this is why. ofsted are great for education but we are carers primarily NOT educators yes within our day we ,may educate the children but we are carers that is why i went into childminding because i wanted to look after( care for ) children i could have stayed in teaching if that's what i wanted to do
sorry i'd like to say rant over but i think this just may be the beginning mandy

sorry but back to pauline's post if i have a child who needs calpol or travel sick pills or anything else which is non prescription medication i will administer it; i will do the relevant paperwork and if ofsted don't like it what are they really going to do. they are not going to take registration away from a good or outstanding childminder who cares enough for a child that they want them out of pain. and if they do then i wouldn't want to be a childminder anyway
