It's best to pay some national insurance stamp because otherwise it will affect how much state pension you will get.

Its £2.20 a week and goes towards your pension so its good to pay. You can claim for exemption if earnings are under £4635.

Everyone can get a state pension forecast - have a look here - www.thepensionservice.gov.uk/atoz/atozdetailed/rpforecast.aspI haven't paid national insurance for over 13 years due to low income but I get topped up by having children 'home responsibilities protection' - once they leave I will have to re-assess... but I'm ok for a few years yet An advisor told me a few years ago they frighten people into paying by saying 'your pension will be affected etc' when in reality if you get credits for children, receive carers allowance, have a husband who's credits you can use or some other things, you really don't have to pay as things stand at the moment I'm 43 and when I asked for a forecast a few months ago, I was told I am online to receive the top pension payment - which is anticipated to be about £70/month - whoohoo! I'll be rich!! Think we'll all be working into our deathbeds!! Sarahx

i pay it, but i have to say i dont even think there will be such a thing as a state pension by the time i get to that age!!!
as sarah said the top amount is £70 anyway, so its not really like you could live on it.
you need a private pension aswell, either that or a rich hubby!!!!

The rules on how many "qualifying years" you need to get a state pension have recently changed so you need less.
If you have dependant children and your earnings are low you can get home responsibilities protection as Sarah mentioned.
It's worth checking it all out before you make a decision - I got caught recently paying one back year to protect my pension only to find 2 months later the number of qualifying years had been reduced so I didn't need to have done that - I didn't get my money back either!
