Is it right that we can claim 40p per mile?
How do I go about writing this in accounts book? Do I just record start & end mileage then put in the total cost?
ie, Mileage 13550-13558- £3.20?

Yes that's right. I don't record the mileometer reading for regular journeys that I know the distance of, I just put - school run ?? Miles per day @ 40p per mile = £?? If the tax man wants to drive around our village to check he's more than welcome If you were going somewhere you don't normally go though then yes, you would need to write it down so you knew for yourself and could work it out.

Do you just write that on your expenditure accounts or do you do a seperate mileage log?

I keep a notebook in the car, but this is mainly so I don't miss out any journeys when I do my accounts. I also put the destination of any trips in my diary. I describe the expense in my accounts as Town, Destination (no of miles x 40p) Bedford, Oasis Pool (67 x 40p) Don't forget to claim for business journeys you make without mindees - to training sessions, shopping for childminding goods etc, if you visit/deliver paperwork to mindees houses, putting up adverts etc You can claim 24p if you use a motor cycle and 20p for using a pedal cycle. www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/senew/SE31240.htm

I usually forget to write the mileage down!!! ;D so when I get home I go onto a route planner website and type in start and finish destinations. It works out the mileage for you. (I usually use the AA one, don't know thw web address but if you google 'route planner' it should come up). My ICP tutor also puts through every other trip to the supermarket as she says that if it wasn't for childminding she would not have to go every week.

Also for anyone who doesn't drive don't forget you can claim for journeys made for childminding - I know someone who wasn't doing this as she thought she couldn't. If my hubby drives me to a training or to buy new toys down they go. I even claim for the trip I make to Ike every so often to buy new stuff eg my flannels, cups etc. The journey goes down £44 (55 mile one way trip to Leeds ikea) often for stuff that costs less than the journey.

Hi Hazel
I dont think you are far wrong there, I have just sat and worked out my mileage :
Mon & Tues - 2 X school runs, 2 x nursery runs & 1 playgroup = school runs are 1 1/2 round trip and nursery runs the same, play group 1 mile round trip = 13 miles.
Wed, Thurs, Fri - 2 x school runs, 2 x nursery runs, 1 longer nursery run ( 3miles each way ), 1 playgroup = 47 miles
Plus and extra running about such as dropping off / picking up children, parks, shops etc, probably around 10 miles a week
Total = approx 70miles per week @ 40p per mile = £28.00
Also I drive a 7 seater 4 x 4 which surely must use more diesel than a small car even though I cant claim any more pence per mile.
Hope this makes sense

I just write in my accounts travel to whereever (x miles) and then the relevant amount in the right column in the accounts
Lucky you John my parents won't let me do that - it would make my life a lot easier they are worried aboutthe cars on the road!!!!!.

That AA Route Planner was a great tip Carole. Many thanks. Used it to calculate the mileage to my local baby store on Saturday to buy supplies. So much easier than making note of the mileage on the car for each trip.

Im stupid I know! xx Not stupid - it's just really difficult to get your head around things at times, lets be honest there is so much paperwork to do! In this situation I would claim 3 miles but there will be other times when the mileage was for example 2.2 miles and I only claim 2 so it is swings and roundabouts. Dee
