Don't worry Tracy, we all had problems posting to start with, there are so many buttons to choose from !! Your question is a good one and you'd be surprised how many minder's don't put down all they should. You need to think of everything you use for minding from wash powder for washing towels etc. to baby wipes and disinfectant. I've got a list somewhere, I'll come back later and list some of the things from it and I'm sure others will have more ideas for you too.

Here's the list of things I've got:
Cleaning and hygiene materials:
For example: Nappy sacks, baby wipes, sterilising tablets, tissues, toilet cleaner, bleach, wash powder, toilet rolls, soap, kitchen roll, washing up liquid etc.
It is not easy to work out some of these - for instance how much wash powder you might have used when washing the soiled clothes of a minded child but all these things soon add up and you will be surprised how much you do spend, so its worth it! Keep a record of how you came to your figures too. (in case the tax officer asks how you calculated them) for instance if shopping at the supermarket keep receipts and circle the products you buy.
You may also deduct:
1/3 rd of your fuel bills 1/10th of your water rates 1/10th of your total earnings from childminding for wear and tear on your home 1/10th of your council tax
These assume you are working full time (calculate them pro-rata if working part time)
Car -See the NCMA Handbook for details of what you can claim or contact your tax office.
Don't forget:
Childminding insurance Ofsted fees NCMA or similar membership fees The cost of account books and record keeping books First Aid box and contents First Aid or any other course fees if you had to pay them yourself Playgroup fees if you pay them instead of the parents Toddler group/Childminding Group fees/subs Parking fees if taking children to activities which require you to pay to park. Paper and ink if using the computer for printouts. Outings - entrance fees etc. if you pay for them. Telephone calls
Anyone got any more to add?

I was daunted at first not knowing what I could account for, but I found it a help to buy another childminders accounts package on Ebay.
Havent looked back since and all the categories are set up, all I do is enter the months figures. It also works out the yearly tax if any is payable.
All for less than a tenner!

cleaning of carpets and sofa 1 pair of shoes a year 1 coat per year any courses motor expenses - you can claim either capital allowances which are based on the business proportion of 25% of the vehicle's market value plus the business proportion of all other actual running costs OR a mileage allowance 40p first 10,000 business miles/over 10,000 business miles 25p

I would think you could claim because its something you are using for childminding.

Hi Lavendergirl
I agree with Lesley.
I'd put them in toys and equipment expenses.
