i have had a call today from a mum who has an 11month old and is going back to college.
She said she would get childcare paid for on a 'care to learn' scheme.
i haven't got a clue what this is or how it works??
any advice gratefully received

Yes i have done this in the past........
basically they get a grant for childcare up to a certain amount.
The care to learn people will pay you directly by BACS into your bank (in advance) each month.
Personally i found the whole experience positive and never had an y problems with it.
I just filled out a form and then it all went ahead,
Only thing i would say is to explain to parent that the contract is with her so any probs with system then she is liable for any late payments etc..
good luck, hopefully someone else will be able to expand.
