Research by Notts scientists has dispelled fears that eggboxes are unsafe for children to play with.
Some schools had banned the boxes from model-making sessions on the grounds that they could be contaminated with salmonella.
The University of Nottingham's
Dr Chris Dodd, an expert in food microbiology, and undergraduate Mayura Desai, investigated whether salmonella could survive on containers.
They found that it could last at least a month, but it presented little to no risk and a spray of disinfectant would kill it.
Dr Dodd, who is based at the University's Sutton Bonington campus, said:
"I think the risk is low. They do survive but just squirt it with disinfectant."
The city and county leave it to schools to decide whether to use boxes.
Banks Road Infant School in Toton has not since the 1988 salmonella scare. "It's a historical thing," said a spokeswoman.
Alderman Pounder Infant School in Chilwell does use them. Head teacher Margaret Kimpson said staff had microwaved the boxes in the past, but would now use disinfectant.
Any boxes bearing the British Lion mark contain eggs from hens vaccinated against salmonella.

Never even crossed my mind that they might be a danger.

also I heard somewhere ages ago that you shouldnt use toilet rolls for craft with children, it makes sense really when you think of all the germs that can be on a toillet roll and there no way of cleaning it. I never use them anyway. wrapping paper rolls are just as good if not better!

It's a good point as you don't know how many dirty hands have touched them and as you say wrapping paper rolls are just as good, as are kitchen roll, foil and cling film tubes
