dont know how many of you are particularly green fingered but just wondered if anyone gets the kids involved in any gardening.
only because i've had a fantastic day with the little uns. we potted plants and made hanging baskets and they were totally covered in mud and i had it in my hair cos it was being flicked all over the place. they enjoyed it so much and although it was messy i'd really recommend getting a big bag of soil and a few bedding plants and some big garden pots and getting stuck in. we've had such fun playing and the weather was gorgeous today, so far my best day childminding!!!

i think im going to get some of those type of things, be nice for them to grow something themselves and then eat it! as long as they dont think the big plants we potted yesterday are for eating too!

I got an excellent salad growing kit from B & Q for £2.50. It contiains 12 soil pellets, lettuce, cucumber and tomato seeds. It is really easy to use and the kids have loved watching them seeds grow. We started a few weeks ago and they are still going strong on the windowsill, the next thing is to buy a mini greenhouse ( a plastic one) to move the pots to. Anyone know where I can get one reasonable priced?
Thanks, Victoria.

Hi there
Gardening is such great fun. Sounds like you had a great day with mud in your hair Lana! My chn enjoy weeding too!!
We always do sunflowers and see how tall they get. Chn have to wait a long time to see results but we paint pots then plant out and make plant tags so we remember whose is whose.
We also do hyacinths in Sept to give as Christmas presents for mums. Great fun checking in the dark garage from time to time.
This year we are doing pumpkins for the first time. Starting them off inside in pots then digging over a patch, edging and decorating it then waiting.....
Love the idea of salad. I think I'll do that too. We have small plastic greenhouse and it's been really useful - though you do need to anchor them down if your garden is windy! We got ours in Homebase a while back.

We have been looking at greenhouses. There is a local garden centre near us that is doing a really good deal on the polycarbonate ones. I have so many pleasurable memories of me and my dad(sadly no longer with us) in his greenhouse when I was little. We would spend hours in there tending to the tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and there was even a grapevine which produced the scrummiest grapes. I have wanted one for ages and now I have a perfect excuse. Although I think my husband may be getting wise to me saying "that will be useful for child minding" all the time Amanda xx

Know what you mean Amanda - my other half has got fed up with me saying the same thing over the years and now just looks at me with that knowing look.
The kids and I spent ages in the garden a couple of weeks ago we planted sunflowers, marigolds and pansies. We did several pots so that they could take them home and pots to grow and look after at my house so that we can plant out at a later stage in the garden - which hopefully will look really nice in a few months time.
