Hi all just a quick question what kind of toys resouces do you recommend. Do you have like book area art area quiet are etc and do we have to label the areas. I know i am lucky enough to have a bit of spare room but not that much. Is their anything we have to have like construction or small world animals etc. I never know what i need husband says if I get anymore have to call it a toyshop. I have collecting stuff from freecycle as I dont have a lot of spare cash I do check them and clean them is this ok. Many thanks emma

It doesn't matter where you get your toys from! I get most of mine from car boot sales... It doesn't matter how many you have so long as you have enough to keep the children happy It doesn't matter what areas you have - we're not a nursery (yet!!) Ofsted do like to see labelled boxes and easy access so children can self select. Labels should be multicultural, have words and pictures.... have a look here - www.ltscotland.org.uk - there are some lovely little people - I put them into 'paint' and play with them, then add relevant words You'll find your resources will grow with the likes of the children... one might be into dinosaurs, so you'll buy a few plastic ones from the charity shop, put stones and some soil in the messy tray, get a dino book from the library and make some dinos from junk modelling - take photos and hey presto you've done a dinosaur theme to show Ofsted you are following the children's interests..... leave it around for a few days in case they want to come back to it! Next week, a little one will make a cup of tea - next time you're at a car boot, add some play food (include multicultural bread or pizza or something), make some signs with children for a cafe, visit one for lunch and take photos for the display, provide some paper and pencils to make a menu, a pad to take orders, a tray from the kitchen to bring to the table, a little chefs hat free from the local pizza shop and again take photos to display - you cover sooo many learning and development goals so easily doing things like this... and it's a very cheap way of building up your resources making sure you're getting things the children actually want to play with Sarahx

art area - my dining room (well it was - good job I don't have any friends to entertain lol) book area (bookcase in the corner of my living room) water play - in garden sand play - sand pit in garden role play ( I am lucky enough to have a large playroom and have sort of sectioned it off into four areas - only problem is the children have to play with the toys and they end up all over lol even though things are labelled) music corner - digitalpiano in the corner of my living room
and the day Ofsted insist on labels I will label them - when I get the phone call for to say they are coming and take themdown the day after they have been - It's my home
I am not a nursery and parents choose me for that. I do have labels on my boxes (well did - I have new storage that needs labelling) and it does help them to look for what they need and I am all for independence

The other thing is I used to use the loft a lot before I had the playroom and swapped toys around every month (meant I could have twice as many toys lol). I still have lots up there eg my halloween box, my christmas box, etc. I know where everything is (well I know its in the loft) and if I I have a child with an interest and know there is something in a box I can at least find it. I am plannig on having boxres based on themes eg a dinssaur box so that if a child is interested it cancome down but not take up space when they are not interested - does that make sense.
I agree with SArah a lot of my stuff came from car boots it frees up money for other things that way - tend to buy puzzles and games new after a few dodgy missing piece ones from car boots
love Kate
