I was thinking about my charges today... cant believe my registration feels like its taking forever GRRR Anyway.... I will be charging parents full fee for when they are on holiday but what about my holiday? Do any of you charge for your holidays? If i recollect correctly im sure my old childminder charged me a bit... what do you guys do? I only want 2-3 weeks a year and any other time i'll take unpaid... however i wondered whether i should charge half fees or full fees. After all they still get there Tax credits dont they. Answers on a post card please

Hello
Yes I do understand what you are saying some parents do still get their tax credits - but some do not even receive them or claim for them
I charge parents for time off - illness or holiday or a occasional day off- whatever the reason they still have to pay
I do not charge for my holiday at all If I am ill I do not charge If I had to have a day off for any reason I would not charge
We are all different though so it is up to you

Hi,
I do the same as Angel and Kelly, seems fairer to parents but being self employed we are all entitled to work out our own fee structure.
There are quite a few childminders near to me that charge full fee for their own holidays too

I take 4 weeks holiday a year at full pay. I am in London and its the norm with CM in my area. As I say to parents would you accept a job with no paid holiday? No exactly!!

I'm in the same situation as Charlie i.e. thinking about what/if I'm going to charge for holiday fees. At first I was going to charge half fees for parents holidays and none if I'm on holiday. But now I think I'm going to change it to half fees if either myself or the parent is on hol.
My problem is this: I have a parent interested in me minding his baby. I mailed out my details which included info about hols. It said I would charge parents half fees for their hols but none for my own. Since then I've had a rethink and would like to do half fees if hols are my own OR parents. No contract has been signed yet. Do you think it would be too cheeky of me to tell him I've revised my hol fees and need agreement on my new terms?
Need a bit of advice on this one. Thanks xxx

I have 4 weeks off per year plus all bank holidays I get full pay but this is up to the childminder.
I don’t call it holiday pay I call it’s a retainer fee, because we are self employed then the parent don’t seam to question it.
If I am ill I do not charge

I charge half fees for parents holidays (up to 4 weeks per year) and I don't charge at all when I am on holiday or if I am ill. (Still charge full fee for parent or child illness)

I can't bring myself to charge for my hols as I give myself up to 30days on contract and never had it questioned once! (not that I ever have that many but good for training courses having family birthdays ect.)

I feel a lot more confident now about discussing the whole hol issue. It's difficult to know how to broach the subject without making parents run for the hills. It's scary when you're starting out - you desperately need children to mind because you need a salary but you don't want to be taken advantage of, if you know what I mean! I want to be fair but don't want to come across as desperate.

Hi,
I have just started minding again after having a 3 year break. I have 5 minded children, before and after school and school holidays. I charge half fee for my 4 weeks holiday and full for any holidays the parents take that arent the same weeks as mine. Those that I never mind during school holidays I charge half of their normal weekly term-time rate as a retainer. All the parents are happy with this. I also get paid monthly in advance and tell parents my holidays for the year ahead. They have thought this great and have booked their holidays next year to coincide with mine. Knowing 3 of children have parents living seperately helps... coz I know I will have lots more weeks off they have to pay full for.
