I did not get paid when I was off sick (but did not expect to as I could not care for the children)

Do you mean do you get paid by the parents ?
If that is what you mean then I guess it would depend what you have in your contract
I do not get paid if I am ill
Or do you mean can you claim sick pay ?
I had to have a week off last year and was told by the Dr that I could claim sick pay because he wanted me to have 6 weeks off He was going to give me a form
So I think your doctor can give you a form - I think !!!!
I think if you claim for sick pay you can not claim for the first 3 days anyway so it might not really be worth your while
Hope this answers your question

Not sure on claiming sick pay - doesn't it depend on whether you pay your national insurance or not?

I got incapacity benefit a few years back whilst I was off work after a Hysterectomy, ok it was not a huge amount, but it was better than nothing. June

Yeah thats the one - I could not remember what it was called
The hospital told me to do that
But seriously wonder if it would be worth your while just for a week !!

thanks everyone,
Not worth it for a week i suppose i state that i don not charge for my sick in my policies - but i'm been signed off by the gp so i thought it might be different that i am able to work but choose not to as instructed by gp.

It may not be much money for just one week but, depending on the ailment, you may find you need to claim for more than a week - eg, if your condition worsens and you need to extend your week or if the condition returns. (Hope it doesn't BTW)
Also, there is always the possibility that you may need further time off for unrelated conditions - eg if other members of your family are sick, you have a funeral to go to etc. There is no possibility of financial help for any of these eventualities.
So although you might not get much for this week I would claim it anyway. Kind of like the milk reimbursements - the income from this doesn't seem much - but why turn down the option? "Every Little Helps".
