Hi all,
Im almost registered, I have my registration inspection on Friday.
I already have 1, maybe 2 mindees lined up.
How do most of you get paid, in arrears or advance?
Im thinking that if it is in advance then I will know where I am and not be messed about if the mindee is off sick or collected early.
Thanks in advance
Debbie

Hi there I am in same position as you, just waiting for my insurance to go through, and then for my certificate to arrive I'll be charging in advance, weekly or monthly, according to how parents prefer - as you say at least you aren't being messed about then and you know where you are.

All my families pay in arrears, I negotiate with parents what they are able to do. I thought about when I went back to work, I found it so hard as I couldn't afford childcare until I had my first months wages. I do make the parents sign an additional document which states if payment is late I will charge additional £5 per day and after 5 days services will be withdrawn. If I have ever had a family where I think it may be an issue or for occasional care I probably would not offer this service. I know many childminders will not except payment in arrears but it works for me and my families.

Getting paid in advance can save you a lot of problems especially if the arrangement breaks down.
I'm usually paid weekly in advance now and haven't had any problems.
Sometimes though if parents have struggled I've come to another arrangement with them, so I can be a bit of a softy - it's all about judging whether the parent is genuine or not and that's not always easy.
Decide what you want to do and then put it in writing and let new parents have a copy, that should make it easier as you don't have to discuss it if you don't want to and it's clear to parents

Years ago I used to let parents pay me when they got paid at the end of the week or month
I have not done that for ages though
Always best to have it in advance then if they do not turn or are sick or anything at least you have still been paid
Good luck with the minding

Ive got 2 mums who pay me in advance weekly and 2 mums that pay me when they get paid at end of month.
I do it to suit them plus its good getting money serveral times over the month rather than 1 lump sum.

Hi there,
All my parents pay a month in advance, with a 4 week termination period on the contact. I also have them all set up a standing order, so I don't have to ask for money if its late. It's worked really well so far - no stress.

Definitely advance!
Most will pay at the end of the week but it's not worth the risk, there is always one who will take advantage!

That is a good point actually Denise about the tax credits
If a parent tells you she can not afford to pay you because she is wating for this then she must still pay you It is best to point this out when you first meet a parent explain that they might have to wait a few weeks for their money to come through That way they know they have to find the money themselves
I have waited for parents to receive this in the past and it has been a nightmare so I would not do it now

I get paid in advance by all my customers i find this is much easier and you know where you stand like for example if they decide just to not show up one day least you have that days money in hand already. i did get in a tricky situation in the summer where parent paid weekly and at start of week but they decided they didnt need childcare anymore so left me with no fees with no notice and took a while to get the money from the customer. so i would personally try and get all fees in advance

Im paid in advance. I look after my neighbours kids too and its easier for her to give me a cheque at the end of the month around pay day, she is the only one who pays in arrears and this is only because I know her so well, anyone else its definately in advance.

Well i have learnted alot in these few days, i really tried to help mum of the child i look after, by not charging her in advance not charging for being, not charging extra, and its all been thrown back in my face, like a bolt of lightening, next time i am goona be a bit more firm and more professional approach, trust me to get the bad apple straight away

To be honest Snowqueen I am sure most of us can say the reason we are where we are now is because we had to learn certain things the hard way
