I have just had a visit from a really nice fireman - actually there were 4 but i couldn't choose between them. Anyway, I had booked a free home risk assesment (booked online)with the Surrey fire & rescue brigade. They were brilliant (and fit).
They fitted 2 free smoke alarms for me - apparently they will give you as many as they think you need. They even gave me a couple of really nice, colourful books aimed at children to teach them the dangers of matches and various leaflets.
Ofsted will be really impressed - I know i was and not just with the firemen.
I think all childminders should take advantage of the free service. Besides what child or woman doesn't want a real fire engine and firemen turning up at their front door - it certainly had the neighbours curtains twitching.

Hi Lucia
I had a visit a couple of weeks ago - previous thread on it. I had 5 firemen - ha ha - one more than you and I couldn't choose either. All uniformed - very nice.
Didn't get any books though - stingey monkeys.
My son loved looking at the fire engine. Really good.
Be careful when anyone ringing for a visit. Childminders are classed as a home business which is not covered for visits. Domestic visits are ok so don't say you are a childminder.

I hadn't actually thought of that! Although I didn't mention childminding, I did have my certificate on the wall and toys everywhere (my grandson had just been). They either didn't notice or didn't care not sure which.

Oooh! How lovely!
I am so jealous! Am in army accommodation at the moment so can't arrange a visit but as soon as I'm back home next year I'll be sorting one out!
Hubby's in the army but that's never been appealing to me - it's always been firemen and bikers! Hee hee!
Knowing my luck I'll get one old, crotchety fireman come round who's winding down on the way to retiring! ;D

A competition is in order to see who receives the most firemen - 5 seems to be the highest so far.
I am attempting to attach a couple of piccies of my son. Not done this before so sorry if it doesn't work.

Well I can top the lot of you a whole crew plus engine turned up for mine (it was last September before I was registered, but we'd hjust moved in and I wanted everything checked out for us) - well they had been on a call out a few streets away & decided it made the most sense to come to me & then go back to the station. I see them all regularly - just bump into them everywhere!! But what's funny is they really want to join up my hubby!!!!He's reluctant but for obvious reasons I would LOVE IT!!! Tasha

Poor you Dee!
What about if you phone up and shout things into the distance like, 'leave those matches alone - they're not yours!' or 'wait a minute please, I'll have to move the bin out of the way of the exit before you can go into the garden!' - they are bound to rush round then - maybe even with their sirens! Ha ha!

Sounds like a good idea Lorri but the only problem is knowing my luck I will also have Ofsted coming round shortly afterwards and questioning my suitability!!!! Dee

Dee
Have you told them you are a childminder. If you have, this might be the problem. They see you as a business so won't come out.
Could you try again if you did and just claim to be a domestic home you want checked over??
Worth a try. Susan x
