Got a call at 2.45pm today food safety inspector he was in the area and could come to me in 10 mins help! I had lunch dishes on the side playdough on the small table kids waiting to go out to play, i quickly put on their shoes got some toys out then got on with the dishes check fridge etc (sink by kitchen door so could see kids all the time) He arrived on time he was very nice asked questions then he realised i had a intermediate hygiene cert told me i was over qualified only recomendations was to wear a apron and get and complete a safer food pack, whatever that is. Anyone else been visited? Angela

Hi Angela, Did he have ID?
I thought these people were supposed to write to you saying they were coming, not just turn up!
I'd have done like Tasha and said it wasn't convenient and to make an appointment!
Well done on getting yourself sorted though, sounds like you had everything under control.

Hi Pauline Yes he had ID. In Cornwall they are recommending childminders sign on as a food business if we cook food for the children so we register with the county council food safety dept they then sent me a form to fill in stating what i do for the children and how many children. Then they decide if i need to be inspected. I did get a phone call about 6 weeks ago asking to come and see me but i was busy that day so i felt i couldn't say no again he was very nice. Some other childminders in my area have been asked by ofsted to get a course booked. I was told by the inspector i could just complete the form with the pack as i have already done the intermediate food hygiene which is a higher qualification. I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't become compulsory all over

I wouldn't be surprised either Angela, that's why I did the Food Hygiene on-line while I had the time, rather than when I'm told to do it!!

I rang Surrey CIS and they said that ALL childminders have to be registered as a food businesses. However, Surrey County Council have been told NOT to promote this as the FSA could not handle a large influx of applications / inspections and that they are working through the country contacting and inspecting childminders!!!!! Thought this might be of interest! Tasha PS. Thanks for link ordered mine yesterday

In my area we had to be registered as a food business back in Novemeber / December
Strange really how different areas differ Some childminders do not even know where they stand
But yes everyone will have to register in the end

Silly us!!!
Obviously we need to add another requirement to the roll of a childminder - 'PSYCHIC' - otherwise how else are minders supposed to know? - it's no wonder that newly registered minders struggle when they first start up!!

I am registered with them but she said not to bother sending back any of the paperwork the sent me??? Really confused now as I registered ages ago and now havnt heard anything and been told to just leave it............... im sort of wondering what I should do?

Hi Lana
Your Support minder should be fully aware of the correct procedures in your area therefore you should be able to trust what she says.
Having said that I have been recommending to all my ladies that they do register and get all the paperwork sorted as as we all know it will soon come into force anyway - so why wait.

We are not all like like Tasha - I take my role very seriously and contact my ladies at least 2 -3 times a month to make sure that everything is ok and they know that they can phone me at any time if they need any advice or have any problems.
It's unfortunate you have a bad Support Minder but thankfully I think they are few and far between.

My food pack arrived this morning. Looks very professional!
Don't know if I'll fill in all the forms, will have to read it more thoroughly first, but it gives lots of good advice and information.
