Re: EYFS Training « Result #2 on Jan 15, 2008, 9:51am »
Regarding this course has anyone been on it yet if so what happens are we asked to do tests ,and are we allowed to take notes. I am going on mine tommorow and i am a little nervous.
I had my inspection 28th november and Ofsted posted my crb's for me and husband on the 29th according to their computer system. Still no sign of either of us getting them back yet!
& I really want to get them so I can get reg number and insurance and start minding!
Saying that I put in for my 1st aid training and the paperwork for that hasn't arrived back yet so i don't know if early years are sitting on that one or the postman!
Fingers crossed I've my ICP exam next tuesday but since they cancelled my 1st date for it the night before the exam I'm not holding my breath for it!
Sorry for the rant it just seems like so much is in the hands of other people & not all of them are as committed to getting me minding as I am!

Hi Lorraine
I am so sorry that you feel so ill.
I can't help you I'm afraid as I had hyperemesis throughout my pregnancy and ended up in hospital with dehydration.
I tried everything but only anti-sickness tablets helped and I had to take them right up to the day Benjamin arrived! Even with the tablets I felt so ill and couldn't do anything, I couldn't concentrate, I couldn't cope with being around lots of people and I couldn't drive throughout! Not only that but we'd moved to a completely new area far from home where I didn't know anyone and never got to know anyone! Not a good time in my life! But saying that it was completely and utterly worth all of it!!!!
Sorry no help was I!
I really hope that you begin to feel better soon it doesn't last for most people.

My 2 year old sleeps on a matress on the floor - the matress fits inside my baby dan and my little one sleeps in "his house" . When he's tired he is happy to lie down and go to sleep and when he's asleep I shut the gate so that I know he's safe . The babydan is only used as his "sleeping house", he doesn't go in there unless he is going to sleep.

Just an update to say I have now bought one from ebay. Couldn't really afford it, but have done some extra work to earn the extra money.
Yes you can hire them, but it seems to be more expensive to hire one than to buy one! Mainly because the ones you hire are much better quality as they are made to last

Re: how do i charge/wor out holiday only contracts « Result #37 on Dec 1, 2007, 5:09pm »
the child is 4 so she goes to school i will be looking after the child from 9-3 pm 6 hours a day 30 hours a week and i charge £3.20 per hour so it would come to £96.00 a week
So if i'm to charge a retainer i've put in my policy that i would take a retainer of 50% the normal fee for term time contracts shouls i apply this to holiday only contracts aswel?
if so then it would be £48.00 retainer a week for term time and normal fee during the times i'm having the child.
i have found a couple of brill sites. www.mycalendarmaker.com where you can print off each month etc and get the children to do a picture on each page and then bind or staple them together. Similar ones at staples start at 8.99 each! Christmas and Hanukka colouring pages:- http://www.myactivitymakes.com/?q=holiday_coloring.pages

Re: how do i charge/wor out holiday only contracts « Result #44 on Dec 1, 2007, 4:34pm »
Personally i wouldnt charge a retainer during term time as i dont know any parent who would be willing to pay that. A child who only comes in holidays is normally in the 5-8 age range, or the 8 and over, so i would have space for them and would just charge my normal rate in the holidays for them.
If i have it the other way around, ie a child age under 5 who only attends in term time, i charge a 50% retainer fee in holidays as i wouldnt be able to fill that.

I love using freecyle. It used to annoy me when we were taking stuff to the local tip as alot of it was in really good condition.
Now I just put up a list onto freecylce and its taken almost next day and saves you a the hassle of taking it to charity shops( who never seem to want it) or the tips.
Got my daughter last month a lovely pink and pine dressingtable for her room that funnily enough matches her wardrobe and chest of drawers.

I have in my policies that its will be £5 for every 15 mins over the collection time. That way they make sure theyre on time or it can get quite costly.
Im quite soft and dont really mind if they phone me to say that theyre stuck in traffic as it can hapen to anyone but its the ones that dont phone and are late all the time that annoys me.
All I can say is make the charge worth while, after all its classed as overtime to us, just like if they work on at work they get overtime pay.

We then turned the garage into the playroom and before i went on holiday sent photos of everything in along with a risk assesment and they rang to say all was ok! can't believe they are making you wait! just pester the hell out of them they will soon get fed up with you!

I've got a parent who's doing this to me - she claims that she's in debt and got no money to pay me for the notice - so what i've decided to do from now on is the charge 4 weeks notice period in advanmce with two weeks advance fee. - that way if they leave the notice fee would have already been paid.
Re: I love Freecycle « Result #57 on Dec 1, 2007, 1:06pm »
Yes freecyle is brilliant. The amount that we have for our baby, which is due on 23rd, is unbelievable. We have everything, you would think we had loads of money. Truth is, most of it was from freecycle!! Didn't just put out hundreds of wanted adds, but just viewed through the offered since I found out I am pregnant and gradually got everything we needed!
Its fantastic and I would recommend to anybody. I have given plenty of stuff away too so have returned the favours!

Just to add that the Mum was on a days holiday today from work and was still late (the usual 10 minutes). She apologised for being late and I threw in that she had been late all this week. She admitted to being poor with timekeeping and that work has been keeping her busy. Anyhow, I had to give her the invoice for next week so what I did for the 35 minutes was divide her hourly rate by 60 then multiplied it by 35. Came to the grand total of £2.04 (whoopee). I'll be renewing her contract for January so will have to have stern words about her hours. Thanks for your advice.
I can understand why you have worked it out this way but charging so little for her lateness will not make her change her ways as the extra money is of little inconvenience to her but the time is a huge inconvenience to you.
I think you should at least charge her a set amount for every part/full half hour that she is late. If you don't want to make the charge too high then you could charge something like £5.00 for every part/half an hour late.
You will find this will help her with her time keeping as she won't want to be charged at least £5.00 every day as it will soon add up.
Obviously it is up to you and you have to do what is right for you anr your setting but this woman is taking advantage of you (whether she means to or not!!!) and will continue to do so all the while she thinks she can get away with it and you will end up feeling really resentful - I know I did .

In the past i found they were pretty quick at getting the new certificate out to you as they do appreciate that you are having to put your families on hold.
I would suggest getting everything off to Ofsted asap and just explain to the parents. Hopefully by the time you have unloaded boxes and made the place safe to work and have the kids your new certificate would have arrived.
Re: what do i charge for school holidays etc « Result #61 on Dec 1, 2007, 11:52am »
I was wondering about this too. Do you normally charge a % of the parents fees to keep the child's holiday place open while the child is at school? If that's the case, do you bill them monthly during term time and do they actually pay on time if it's via the post?
What kind of a percentage would be reasonable? I was thinking perhaps a monthly retainer of 10% - 15% of the parents contracted monthly fee as that would work out to between £51 - £76.50 per (4 week) month for a child based upon 8.5 hours @ £3 per hour/5 days per week.
I'm really stumped on this and, like nadmaj, would appreciate a few pointers.
My son's childminder never charged me anything during term time so am I being totally silly if I charge?

I was told ages ago that apparently the reason for doing this is to gather thousands if not millions of email addresses by companies who send spam emails. When you forward an email on to somone, it contains all the previous recipients in it also. Eventually the huge email with all the email addresses manage to make their way back around to the companies who then use your email as a spam dumping ground.

I can't believe it has come round already!!! I am sooo excited. I have got a few new bits a pieces but I think for the first time in ages I am looking forward to a night out with friends without the worry of everyone being judgemental, iyswim!! I feel like I have got to know everyone really really well and I know for definite that none of us are like that.
So I am probably going to wear something I have already in my wardrobe which makes me happy as I have more money left for the children's christmas presents. Theresa we would still love you even if you did come in your "old tat". Mandy, ditto, if you just came in your knickers!!

My CRB was fast-tracked but it still took about 4½ - 5 months. It was a nightmare waiting so long. My advice would be to get your CRB paperwork submitted ASAP.

This is my first Christmas as a Childminder, but luckily for me my daughter's just started working at Argos - so I can get a discount! I have spent £10 per child max., and I have 8 at the moment - so it can be quite expensive can't it?
